Serving on the KANZA Society Board of Directors

The Kanza Society, Inc. is a non profit Kansas corporation that owns and operates the High Plains Public Radio station. Kanza society is governed by volunteer board members throughout the High Plains Public Radio (HPPR) listening area. Each of our board members serves for rotating three year terms. The board's job is to provide oversight and direction to the management of the station. Programming and daily operations are the responsibility of the Executive Director and staff.

We are always seeking qualified candidates to fill board positions that may open up from time to time. As board members complete their terms or have to resign early due to unforeseen personal matters, the board of directors has the duty to replace these board members. Having a pool of qualified and willing candidates available helps your radio station maintain a consistent and diverse group of board members. The composition of your board of directors has a major impact on the direction of HPPR. Each board member's unique qualities and contribution is extremely important to the governance of the radio station and its long term success.

Briefly, a board member's duties include attending the quarterly meetings held in Garden City or occasionally in alternative sites within our listening area. Depending on where the director lives, there could be some travel involved to attend board meetings. These meetings are usually held on Saturdays from 11:00AM through lunch until the board is adjourned, usually around 2:30PM. Some directors choose to serve on various committees and as corporate officers of the board. The scope of involvement will depend on each director’s personal tastes, training, and time. Of course, the board encourages as much involvement as possible, but time and location restraints are a fact of life when dealing with such a geographically diverse group as our board.

Should you be interested in serving on the Kanza Society, Inc. board of directors, you are encouraged to contact the Executive Director to discuss any questions you may have and to obtain a board profile sheet that we ask each board member to complete. Our nominating committee reviews all profile sheets and makes recommendations to the board. You do not have to be knowledgeable in the radio business nor do you need to have any special training. A willingness to become involved, to learn and to serve is the major prerequisite for a board member. You will learn about the station and its business through the board meetings and from occasional staff presentations at the meetings. Periodic E-mails from the Executive Director keep the board members current on station activities.

You may e-mail your questions or interest in serving on the board to the Executive Director at: director@hppr.org.

Remember, the effectiveness of your board has a major impact on the success of HPPR and its ability to provide quality broadcasting to our listening area. Good directors who are willing to get involved and volunteer some of their personal time are hard to find. We invite our listeners to consider board service and learn more about serving on the Kanza Society, Inc. board of directors.
