Gardening in the Heartland Gardening in the Heartland - by Rachel Snyder and Bob Holloway (illustrator), University Press of Kansas, 1991.

My number one choice for great information. Common sense information is reasonably arranged in chapters that discuss soil and growing conditions, vegetables and herbs, fruits and flowers, trees and shrubs. I particularly love the author's little jewels of advice entitled 'Things Nobody Ever Tells You'. Snyder zeros in on Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri, but I'm sure our Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado listeners will find lots of useful information.
Growing Trees on the Great PlainsGrowing Trees on the Great Plains - by Margaret Brazell, Fulcrum Publishing, 1992.

Another 'oldie but goodie', this book is a useful guide for those of us who insist on growing trees where they aren't meant to be! Brazell covers water, weeds, and preferred species in an area she knowingly terms 'the land of torrential dry spells'.
Gardening: Plains and Upper MidwestGardening: Plains and Upper Midwest - by Roger Vick, Fulcrum Publishing, 1991.

A guide for the average home gardener, written by an Englishman who, when transplanted onto the prairie lands of the U.S., learned from experience and then shared his findings.
Gardening in the Prairie LandsGardening in the Prairie Lands - by Cathy Wilkinson Barash & Melinda Myers, Cool Springs Press, 2005.

A month-by-month layout of gardening tasks, supplemented with specific info about the related plants or chores. If you're a charts and graphs lover, this is the book for you. Content is mostly based on zones 4 and 5, so our Texas and Oklahoma gardeners might look elsewhere.
Gardening With Prairie PlantsGardening With Prairie Plants - by Sally Wasowski, University of Minnesota Press, 2002.

Landscaping layouts, great photos, and an extensive plant profile for prairie gardens. Grasses and wildflowers abound, but there's also information about watering systems, wetlands, and other neat stuff that should interest gardeners from Canada to Mexico.
Growing Vegetables in the Great PlainsGrowing Vegetables in the Great Plains - by Joseph R. Thomasson, University Press of Kansas, 1991.

Seeds, transplants, wind, water, and bugs.-- it's all here, plus individual veggie profiles and how to market the excess bounty you'll have once you've put all this good advice to good use.
The Gardener's Common Sense Guide to Vegetable Gardening in the MidwestThe Gardener's Common Sense Guide to Vegetable Gardening in the Midwest - by Kay Melia, Morris Publishing, 2008.
Available directly from Kay Melia c/o The Gardener, 1565 Road 65, Goodland, KS 67735.

Advice for the beginning vegetable grower from a Northwest Kansas gardener. Lots of recipes will help you deal with your successes.
Best Garden Plants for KansasBest Garden Plants for Kansas - by Annie Calovich & Laura Peters, Lone Pine Publishing, 2007.

A dandy little guidebook for annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, herbs and bulbs. It's amazing how much information these two writers can get onto a single page.
