After the Holidays, A Reminder of What's Important

Center for Rural Affairs

As the holiday season ends and many of us settle back into our routines, we often take a collective sigh of relief. Christmas can be a stressful time for so many of us. It means hectic travel, crowded stores, family squabbles. But John Crabtree at The Center for Rural Affairs recently receiveda reminder of the importance of the season. Kolt Smith, the six-year-old son of one of John’s colleagues at the Center for Rural Affairs, wrote John an essay. The essay was accompanied by an illustration, and it is one sentence long. It read, “On my break I went to grandma and grandpa and we ridid the hors wagin.”

It was signed simply, “Kolt.” Crabtree writes, “Kolt remembered what matters most about the Holiday season. . . . He doesn’t mention gifts.”

The boy simply shared a favorite memory. Perhaps we can all take a lesson from this six-year-old.
