The town of Canadian, in the northern Texas Panhandle, has received a prestigious designation from the State of Texas.
As The Amarillo Globe-News reports,the Texas Commission on the Arts has named Canadian an official cultural district—one of only 26 such districts in the whole state.
With the new designation, the town of fewer than 3,000 people becomes the northernmost, smallest and most rural cultural district in the Lone Star State.
The distinction will now make Canadian eligible for additional grants and programs. Canadian has long been celebrated in the Panhandle for its unique cultural legacy, including its historic theater, historic homes and architecture, beautiful churches, public art, and galleries and studios.
In her letter of support for Canadian’s application, Beth Duke, executive director of Center City in Amarillo, called Canadian “a Panhandle jewel.”
