Garden City Approves Plan for ‘Sports of the World’ STAR bond Facility

GMCN Architects

Tuesday, the Garden City Commission approved an agreement with GC Investments, Inc. for constructing the ‘Sports of the World’ facility.

As the Garden City Telegram reports, the non-binding agreement lays out terms for the first phase of the project and designates the master developer as GC Investments, which is owned by locals, Cecil O’Brate and Amro Samy.

In January, the Kansas Department of Commerce authorized $25.4 million in revenue bonds for the facility, which will include indoor soccer fields, basketball courts, a trampoline park, batting cages, and sand volleyball courts, as well as areas for pickleball and cornhole.

STAR bonds essentially allow a new development to pay for itself. They are used to finance development of destination commercial, entertainment and tourism areas, then the sales tax generated by the development is used to pay off the bonds.

The facility will be located on the east side of Garden City, near the Schulman Crossing shopping center.

Construction on the project is expected to begin at the end of this year or early next year.
