Students in Colorado are increasingly reporting friends and classmates who are at risk of harming themselves.
This as the state has seen an alarming spike in youth suicides over the past few years.
As The Denver Post reports, suicide has become the leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of 10 and 24 in Colorado.
But as the state’s youth suicide rate has skyrocketed, the number of suicide-related reports coming into the program, Safe2Tell, has also increased.
The program was created following the deadly shooting at Columbine High School as an avenue for parents, students and teachers to share information.
Safe2Tell went live in 2004 and received 102 reports during the 2004-2005 school year. But during the 2017-2018 school year, students shared 16,000 total reports - which also include reports of bullying - with the program, which allows those reports to be made anonymously by phone call, mobile app or online.
Suicide reports surpass bullying as the leading reason students contact the program.
