Rainfall Helps In Fight Against Oklahoma Wildfires, Which Were Large Enough To Be Seen From Space

Oklahoma Forestry Service

Weekend showers over Oklahoma helped firefighters in the battle against two large wildfires – one of which was so large that it could be seen from space.

As The High Plains Journalreports, as of Monday, the Rhea fire in Dewey County had scorched around 287,000 acres and the 34 Complex fire in Woodward County had burned close to 63,000 acres. The Rhea fire was 74 percent contained and the 34 Complex fire was 94 percent contained.

245 personnel along with the Oklahoma National Guard and state and local fire crews have been assisting with the Rhea fire and 186 personnel, 14 fire engines, four dozers, Oklahoma Forestry Service helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft have been battling the 34 Complex fire.

The fires, fueled by several days of high winds, have taken two lives and grew so large that they’re visible from space, according to Business Insider, which published photos from the European Space Agency.
