Miriam Scott – Book Leader for Belonging: A German Reckons with History and Home by Nora Krug

Hello, Radio Readers! Miriam Scott here. I was born in a small town called Mechernich in western Germany in September of 1979. Those of you who are “nearest town people” would recognize my home area as near Cologne, which is about 1.5 hours from Mechernich. My parents owned a restaurant/hotel/ bowling alley/movie theatre -- yes, all in one weirdly shaped building.

I met my future husband in 2000 in Bonn, Germany where I worked at an event agency. He was a Marine security guard for the American embassy. In 2002 we married in Conifer, Colorado, and set up residence in Aurora, Colorado. Our first child was born in November 2005. In December 2009 we were a family of five, our youngest a month old, and we moved to Amarillo, Texas, where we still live today.

We found our church home at St Andrew's Amarillo in 2016. In 2017 I decided to do something no one in my family has ever done before: go to college! During the same time, an old call came back: the call to serve God. Now a member of a church that acknowledges women as equal, I started asking questions and before I knew it, I was officially in the discernment process (which is lengthy and detailed in the Episcopal Church.)

I was ordained to the priesthood in May of 2021, and am finishing up my studies at WTAMU for a Bachelor's in Social Work in the fall of 2022. I work part time as a priest and part time as a student. As a student I will begin field work this January. My internship is with the Potter County Sheriff department in the inmate program.

In a small nutshell, that's me.

I look forward to serving as your book leader for Nora Krug’s Belonging: A German Reckons with History and Home.  I have wrestled with my country's history as have many people of my generation in Germany. There is so much to learn from questioning our history!
