Government, Academia, and Industry Join to Create a Better Wind Farm

Texas Tech University

What do you get when you combine resources from The U.S. Department of Energy, a private company named Vestas, and Texas Tech University?  A project with the goal of creating a better wind farm.

Earth Techling reported the project is not just theory, but practical application.  Three turbines have been constructed: two turbines funded by the Department of Energy, and the third by Vestas.     The intention is to observe the way turbines, arranged in a group, affect one another.   It is estimated up to 40% of wind energy loss is caused by tower interaction.

The turbines are not functioning solely for science.  They are actively producing power.  Resulting revenue will be used to support graduate students conducting wind research projects.
