Largest Wind Farm in U.S. Will Supply Power to OK, TX Panhandles

The construction of what will be the largest single-site wind farm in the United States was announced last week, and the site will provide power to residents of Western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle.

As The Houston Chronicle reports, the Ohio-based utility giant American Electric Power announced its plans to build the wind farm in the Oklahoma Panhandle. The farm will have the capacity to produce 2,000 megawatts, which is enough to power almost half a million Texas homes on a hot day.

The project is expected to cost $4.5 billion.

The so-called “Wind Catcher” project will contain 800 turbines, and the wind farm is expected to make Oklahoma the number two producer of wind energy in the U.S. by the end of the year, ahead of Iowa at number three and behind only Texas.
