Despite the fact that it’s almost Halloween, the weather in the Texas Panhandle has yet to turn cold for any significant length of time, and mosquitoes continue to plague the region.
As The Amarillo Globe-News reports, recent rains combined with warm temperatures have resulted in rampant breeding grounds for the bloodsuckers. Since July, Amarillo has received 17 inches of rain—the third highest amount ever.
The City of Amarillo has been spraying and fogging neighborhoods with a thoroughness usually reserved for the dog days of August. Amarillo will continue fogging the public parks until the first freeze arrives.
Meanwhile, officials are urging citizens to drain standing water and wear long pants and long sleeves, as well as limiting time spent outside during dusk and dawn. In addition, sitting near a fan can help as mosquitoes don’t like moving air.
