Kansas Appeals Voter ID Ruling

John Hanna

Kansas has become the latest state to put forward an attempt to set up strict citizenship tests aimed at keeping thousands of would-be voters from casting ballots in November, reports USA TODAY.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has asked a federal appeals court in Denver to take up the state's proof-of-citizenship voting case.

In May a federal judge ordered Kansas to add 18,000 people to the state’s voter rolls. These voters had previously been turned away from motor vehicle offices for not providing adequate proof of citizenship such as birth certificates. Federal law requires states to provide easy access to voter registration when people renew their driver's licenses. Koback and the GOP-led Kansas government would like to see those voters removed from the rolls again. In a statement, the ACLU said Kansans aren’t being told they must present additional citizenship paperwork in order to become registered—only to find out later that they've been suspended from voting.
