If the UK Can Brexit, Can Texas "Texit"?

Public Domain

As Britain continues its faltering attempt to extricate itself from the European Union—a process better known as “Brexit”—some Texans may be wondering whether the same thing could happen in the Lone Star State.

Is a “Texit” possible?

According to The Texas Tribune, the short answer is no. At least, Texas could not leave the United States through any specified legal means. Many historians agree that secession as a real American possibility died when Lee surrendered at Appomattox.

But, it’s also important to note that, while the U.S. Constitution sets out rules to allow states to join the union, there is no language specifying how a state might leave under its own volition.

However, with that said, Texas does have a unique right among states to split itself into five separate states, should it so choose.
