Planned Parenthood Sues Kansas Over Loss of Funding

Planned Parenthood has filed a federal lawsuit against the state of Kansas over a plan to strip it of government healthcare funding, reports Newsweek.According to court documents released this week, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment plans to cut Planned Parenthood off from state Medicaid funds beginning next Tuesday. The agency is acting at the bequest of Governor Sam Brownback, who says no Kansas taxpayer money should go to Planned Parenthood.

In response to the order, Planned Parenthood filed its lawsuit against Kansas on Wednesday. The organization argues the state will break federal law and violate the US Constitution if it follows Brownback's order.

The lawsuit reads, in part, "This action challenges [an] unlawful, unwarranted and politically motivated decision.” The women’s health organization says at least 24 states have cut funding to its clinics since last summer.
