Oklahoma Again Leads Nation In Education Cuts

CC0 Creative Commons

Oklahoma has once again been ranked first in the nation when it comes to slashing funding for education.

As KOSU reports, over the past decade Oklahoma has cut school funding more per-pupil than any other state. According to a new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, since 2008, the amount of funding available per pupil in Oklahoma has dropped by almost 30 percent.

In dollar terms, that drop means Oklahoma is spending $1,000 less per student than it was 10 years ago. It was common for states to slash education funding in the wake of the 2008 recession. While Oklahoma has shown the greatest reluctance to raise education funding, over half of states have yet to return funding levels to those pre-recession levels.

Tellingly, the CBPP report was entitled, “A Punishing Decade for School Funding.”
