Groom's Cross Crown May Be Stolen by Corpus

Folks in Groom, Texas, may have a spiritual bone to pick with the Texans down on the coast. For over 20 years, Groom has been home to the largest freestanding cross in North America. But if all goes to plan, one day Corpus Christi will be home to the largest cross in the Western Hemisphere, reports The Houston Chronicle.

The cross in Groom is 190 feet tall. But this new $1 million cross in Corpus will best the Groom cross by 20 feet, measuring 210 feet tall. According to Pastor Rick Milby of Abundant Life Fellowship, the idea for Corpus’s cross came after he saw a cross near Houston’s own Sagemont Church. That one is 170 feet high, or 20 feet shorter than the one in Groom.

In the early 20th century, New York City was famous for its clash of architects trying to erect the tallest skyscraper in the world. Now Texas seems to have a similar battle going, but with crosses.
