One of the world’s most famous wolf packs may be gone thanks to years of excessive hunting, reports The Guardian.

Alaska’s wolves were celebrated in novels by Jack London, and the East Fork pack has been studied for longer than any other collection of wolves on earth.

The East Fork wolf pack was first researched in the 1930s. These predators were the first to provide detailed accounts of wolf behavior and ecology. They live near Denali, North America’s tallest mountain, and they have been hunted and trapped for decades.

Earlier this year their number had been reduced to just one known female, a male and two pups. Hunters were recently seen with the carcass of the radio-collared male wolf. There has been no sign of the female or her pups.
