Amarillo Reports Its First Cases Of COVID-19

The City of Amarillo announced Wednesday night the first positive tests of the COVID-19 virus in the Amarillo area.

According to a press release from the City of Amarillo, two patients tested positive for the virus.

In an email to High Plains Public Radio Thursday, City of Amarillo Communications Manager David Henry said the two people had recently traveled outside of Amarillo.

“No information is available at this time regarding as to where the two individuals traveled,” Henry’s email read.

According the press release, no additional information regarding the patients is available at this time, due to federal privacy laws.

As a result of the two positive COVID-19 cases, the city changed its coronavirus status level to orange.

According to its website, the city’s Coronavirus Status level of orange means it is encouraging people to abide by the following: practice social distancing, enhance hygiene practices, cancel all gatherings of 10 or more people, contact your healthcare provide if you are experiencing symptoms, restrict travel, ensure a reasonable amount of household supplies and monitor www.coronavirus.gov for fact-based information.

The release also said that the city suspended Amarillo Civic Center Complex gatherings and events, in accordance with CDC and White House guidelines. In addition, the city will not be issuing permits for public events for the foreseeable future.
