Looking Back with Gratitude: Fundraising with a Wagon Full of Twists and Fun

Chapter Eight

Roping in the Dollars for KANZ

Who could resist? An offer to have your picture taken as Wolfgang and Mrs. Mozart (Steve Olson, the first music director, felt Mozart’s genius was undeniable). And there would be a volleyball tournament, a flea market, auction, bands, and performers - all to help KANZ-FM mark five years on the air. Summerfest, July 20, 1985, at the Pierceville station also offered food and drink and a chance for listeners to meet the faces behind the voices heard on air and to raise funds for the station.

Another semi-annual favorite event was the Trivia Contest. Listener teams competed for “three trophies of dubious value.” The event spawned teams with such names as The Boot Hill Grave Diggers, Grant County Quiz Kids, Terrible Swedes of Sublette, The Dodge City Pros, Fabulous Germans, The Pendennis Radio Club, Tribune Tumbleweeds and the Ashland Operators. Teams from Ulyses, Santanta, Meade, Leoti, Ashland, Sublette, Dodge City, Liberal, Scott City, Richfield, Cimarron, Holcomb, Hugoton, Tribune and Garden City participated.

Membership Marathons took place every spring and fall with campaign titles such as the “Great Drive to Sign-On”, “Drive to Thrive”, “Silent Drive”, “Quiet Drive”, and “Worth Every Minute- Worth Every Dollar.” November 1986 was declared the best Drive in the history of the Society - $75,894, 223 new pledges, 631 renewals and 18 gifts memberships. The average gift was $54.00 – considerably above the national average. Are you a member?

Underwriting is another important source of revenue. One underwriter has been with the station since the beginning. Regan Jewelry began its 40-year  friendship with the station by sponsoring “Rural Free Delivery”, a morning show offering the old and new, the curious and the common. Quentin Hope, station director, hosted this program of interviews, reviews, feature stories and music.

Membership and Underwriting are the vital tools that help keep HPPR on the air.  Be a part of “roping in the dollars” by joining, making an additional gift, becoming an underwriter, and by sharing with your friends and neighbors your Community Radio – a Sound Investment!
