High-Plains beef could be making its way back to China, reports KWCH.
China, a country that boasts the world’s largest population, has announced they are ready to lift a ban on the import of U.S. Beef. The ban has been in place since 2003.
Over the past two years, the U.S. cattle market has gone from record high prices to a five-year low, where it sits currently. China's cooperation with the U.S. Beef industry could help lift that burden from cattle producers.
However, it won’t be simple for producers to get their beef to China. Beef older than 30 months will still be banned, and U.S. exports will have to comply with several of China's regulations. Still, Tod Kalous, assistant general manager of Pratt Feeders, feels good about the announcement. “As a producer, we are cautiously optimistic at this point for sure,” he said. “It's definitely a potential positive for the industry.”
