Texas District 31 Primary: North versus South?

texasalmanac.com

Incumbent Sen. Kel Seliger, R- Amarillo, will have a Republican challenger from the south in next year’s primary election reported Enrique Rangel for the Amarillo Globe-News.

Mike Canon, former mayor of Midland will be opposing Selinger in the March 4 primary to represent District 31.

“This is something that I gave a lot of thought,” Canon, an oil and gas attorney, said. “I had to put my law practice on hold.”

Seliger says he’s up for the challenge.

“I have a record that I am really proud of and I look forward to debate the issues,” he said.

Seliger does have an advantage over Canon—$1.5 million according to his most recent campaign finance report.

Canon says he is not intimidated.

“I don’t have as much money now, but I’ll be able to raise some,” Canon said. “But what is going to make the difference in this race is our grassroots efforts. We’re going to have a lot of boots on the ground.”
