You might be surprised to learn that the Lone Star State has never elected a Latina woman to Congress. But that may change this November.
As CBS News reports, Sylvia Garcia and Veronica Escobar are looking to cruise to victory in their deep-blue Texas districts. Victories will mean the two women will become the first Latinas to represent Texas in the nation’s capital.
Texas has long been home to the second-largest Hispanic electorate in the nation, after California. But Texas voters have never elected a Hispanic woman to serve in either chamber of Congress.
Growing up, Garcia picked cotton and hacked hay in South Texas, in an effort to help her low-income relatives pay the bills. Meanwhile, Escobar grew up El Paso, taking fast food orders.
Now, both women are set to make history.
According to the latest CBS News/YouGov Battleground Tracker survey, 57 percent of Hispanic voters are "very enthusiastic" about voting this November.
