Texas Continues To Dominate Other States In Wind Energy Production

The Lone Star State is still on top, when it comes to wind energy production, reports The Houston Chronicle.

This week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported that Texas added more than 2,300 megawatts of total installed wind power last year, which brought the yearly total up to nearly 23,000 megawatts of power derived from wind.

That 23,000 megawatts dwarfs the nation’s second-largest producer, Oklahoma, which pumped out 850 megawatts.

WTAMU Wind Turbine Is America’s Largest

A new wind turbine in the Texas Panhandle is the largest in the United States.

As The Amarillo Globe-News reports, the turbine is located at the UL Advanced Wind Turbine Test Facility at West Texas A&M University, in Randall County.

The hub of the turbine stands 427 feet above the ground, and the tip of a blade at its highest point rises to 654 feet. By comparison, that’s one hundred feet taller than the Washington Monument, and over twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty.

Texas Struggles to Meet Wind Energy Challenge

Texas is the most productive state for wind power—by far. The Lone Star State pumps out 18,000 megawatts of energy a year, reports the MIT Technology Review. And that’s not counting an additional 5,500 megawatts of possible further capacity, which is equal to California’s entire installed wind capacity.
