Many Texas and Oklahoma panhandle corn producers have had to delay planting due to wet conditions produced by record levels of rain in recent months. The High Plains Journal reports that corn farmers are considering planting corn hybrids that mature earlier, or perhaps planting other crops such as grain sorghum.
The main issue for Panhandle corn producers is the approaching crop insurance final planting date. But one Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agronomist has said he believes that crops will recover, despite some yellowing from the overly wet conditions. This all depends on the maturity of the plants, however. More mature corn can tolerate saturated soils better. These mature plants will likely recover and go on to produce good crops.
