During this Colorado legislative season, GOP and Democratic lawmakers found little common ground between them. But they did find one issue they could agree on. After years of debate, rain barrels are now legal in the state of Colorado, reports KDVR.
The state senate passed the bill on April 1, and Governor John Hickenlooper signed it into effect last week. By legalizing the use of residential rain barrels, the new measure rescinds what was one of the strangest laws in the state. Coloradans are now allowed to use no more than two rain barrels, however. Those barrels can legally collect a maximum of 110 gallons of rainwater.
Pete Smith, Executive Director of Conservation Colorado, lauded the decision. “This is a victory for Coloradans who care about their state’s incredible rivers, lakes, streams, and waters,” he said. He added: “Rain barrels are . . . a great first step toward conservation.”
