Oklahoma Auctioning Off Bison Herd

The State of Oklahoma is auctioning off an entire herd of buffalo, KOKH reports.

The herd of bison is currently located at Foss State Park, near Elk City, about 90 miles west of Oklahoma City. The herd consists of around 50 buffalo.

The animals are being unloaded via the State of Oklahoma’s surplus auction site. The auction will be open until this Wednesday.  According to state officials, the herd may include some pregnant bison, and the animals have been wormed.

Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department spokeswoman Leslie Blair says the bison are being auctioned because it’s gotten too expensive to feed the animals, due to recent drought conditions in the area. The state also hopes selling the buffalo will allow the Foss State Park pasture to recover. Oklahoma has been mired in a budget crisis for years, and many state parks have been suffering for years as a result.
