A social media use policy adopted by the Kansas Board of Regents is drawing criticism from university faculty and education groups, who claim the new rule raises First Amendment and academic freedom concerns.The regents drew the policy regulating how faculty and staff of the state’s schools can use social media in reaction to a controversial tweet by a University of Kansas professor following September’s Navy Yard shootings, according to the Kansas City Star.
More than 40 Kansas State University professors signed a letter calling for the regents to repeal the policy.
The policy allows state universities to fire or suspend tenured and untenured employees for “improper use” of social media, including inciting violence, posting confidential information about students, and posting things “contrary to the best interests of the university.”
