As of yesterday there’s only one place in Colorado for undocumented immigrants to get a driver’s license reports Colorado Public Radio.
The licensing program is funded by an extra fee charged on undocumented immigrant driver’s licenses, but the DMV needs approval from the legislature’s budget committee before spending the money its collected.
The committee is currently deadlocked on the issue. Republicans don’t have the votes to repeal the policy outright, but they can block its funding.
Republican Sen. Kent Lambert is the committee’s chair. He says he doesn’t know a Republican who supported the measure two years ago.
Democratic Sen. Jessie Ulibarri is an original sponsor of the drivers license bill. He says to hold up the money is the worse insult possible in politics.
The only place for undocumented immigrants to take the test is at the DMV office on Denver’s southwest side.
The slots are full for the rest of the year.
The DMV is telling people without appointments to check back in January.
Democratic lawmakers will likely try to amend the upcoming state budget to allow funding for the program.
