The US’s lead role in imposing sanctions on Russia after the country’s annexation of the Crimea and incursions into the Ukraine has fostered Russian resentment against America. Now Putin has engaged his propaganda machine to encourage fringe groups who would like to see Texas secede from the US.
Putin has compared the Ukraine’s efforts to break away from Russia to Texas’s occasional rhetoric about secession; the Russian president evidently feels that if the Kremlin has to relinquish control of the Ukraine, Washington should have to give up Texas. Now Putin has engaged his internet trolls to galvanize the secession movement in Texas.
