High Plains states are struggling to deal with the Syrian refugee crisis, and many state officials are receiving flak for their positions. In Kansas, a coalition of clergy members urged Gov. Sam Brownback to honor biblical texts urging believers to offer hospitality and compassion for the homeless, poor and hungry. The group sent Brownback a petition signed by representatives of more than 50 Kansas churches, according to The Hutchinson News.
Meanwhile, in Oklahoma, the Deacon of Catholic Charities called on the federal government to pause the admission of Syrian refugees, reports KTUL Tulsa.
And Texas has gone to federal court in its efforts to keep Syrian refugees out of the state, reports The Texas Tribune. Texas claims the federal government violated federal law by moving forward with the resettlement of Syrian families.
Colorado still plans to accept Syrian refugees, according to Coloradoan.
