Erin McLelland came to the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia last week with a message for her party: Pay more attention to rural voters.
The nominee for congress in Pennsylvania says Democrats need to do a better job understanding the concerns of small-town America. McLelland believes the disconnect is hurting the party,reports The Gloucester Times.
“I’m really concerned that the Democratic Party has really started to disengage rural voters,” she said. McLelland added that rural America’s love for the Constitution and for the Second Amendment is not a bad thing. She said these rural beliefs are “very passionate and very pure, and should be embraced by my party and should be inspiring our policies.”
McClelland’s signature issue is addiction treatment and prevention. She’s looking to unseat a Republican lawyer elected to Congress in 2012.
