Could Perry Topple Cruz in 2018?

Copper Neill

A familiar name could unseat Ted Cruz in the Texas Senator’s 2018 re-election bid, reports The Texas Tribune.

According to a new poll, former Governor Rick Perry would beat Cruz by nine percentage points in a head-to-head matchup for the U.S. senate seat. If the election were held today, Perry would get 46 percent of the vote and Cruz 37 percent. Eighteen percent said they were unsure who they would support.

The poll showed that Cruz would handily beat two other potential Republican opponents: Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick  and U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul. In general, Texas Republicans seem to want Cruz as a Senate candidate again in 2018. But the results weren’t overwhelming. A full 43 percent said they would like a different candidate.

The numbers come from a forthcoming survey from the Democratic-leaning firm Public Policy Polling.
