Kansas Political Experts Predict Big Changes in Topeka

Peter Hancock

A gathering of prominent political voices said this week that they believe moderate Republicans and Democrats may win a majority of seats in the Kansas Legislature next month, reports The Lawrence Journal World.

The group, which included former Kansas governor John Carlin, spoke to a gathering of public school officials on Wednesday. “I'm very confident there will be a moderate coalition that will be in the majority,” Carlin said, adding, “but we need it to be as large a majority as possible.” Far-right conservatives have had solid majorities in the Kansas House and Senate since Gov. Sam Brownback took office in 2012.

Since those elections, the state’s budget has been sent into a tailspin, and Kansas has become the butt of jokes on a national scale. Carlin and other moderates believe these circumstances may be enough to effect massive change.
