Colorado Dem and GOP Leaders Unite in Opposition to Ballot Measure

Scott Olson

The heads of Colorado’s Democratic and Republican parties have found some common ground this election season: Neither of them supports a pair of ballot measures that would empower independent voters.

As The Denver Post reports,Proposition 107 and Proposition 108 are designed to give independents a greater voice in Colorado party primaries. State Democratic Party chair Rick Palacio and state GOP chair Steve House have both come out forcefully against the measure.

Proposition 107 would force Colorado to hold a presidential primary, which the state hasn’t done since 2000. Independent voters would be able to vote in that March primary. Meanwhile, Proposition 108 is would institute even more sweeping changes. It would let independent voters participate in all primary races, from Congress to county officials.
