Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has been delivered yet another defeat in court over his plan to prevent people from voting in state and local elections unless they show proof of U.S. citizenship.
As The Kansas City Star reports, a Shawnee County judge has permanently extended an earlier injunction against a two-tiered voter registration system backed by Kobach.
The battle occurred over Kansans who registered to vote while renewing their drivers licenses. These voters did not show enough identification to become registered as voters, according to the Secretary of State. In response, Kobach threw their votes out. But Judge Larry Hendricks re-instated them. ACLU attorney Sophia Lin Lakin called the ruling “a victory for Kansas voters and a stinging rebuke of Secretary Kobach’s repeated efforts to . . . his authority to obstruct . . . access to the ballot.” Kobach plans to appeal.
