In Oklahoma, Republicans hold a supermajority in both chambers of the state legislature. In the Senate they hold a 39-9 advantage, while they outnumber Democrats in the House by 71-30.
Here, courtesy of Oklahoma Watch,are some legislative races to keep an eye on tonight in the Sooner State.
The two candidates battling for Tulsa’s open Senate District 39 have attracted more money than any race this year. Democrat John Waldron is a public-school social studies teacher, while his Republican opponent, Dave Rader, is a former University of Tulsa football coach. The GOP is hoping to prevent Dems from flipping the seat.
Democrats are also hoping to expand their presence with a win in Senate District 37. Republican Sen. Dan Newberry is defending his seat against another member of the “teacher caucus,” Retiring Sand Springs Public Schools superintendent Lloyd Snow.
And in House District 2, Democratic challenger Tom Stites has raised nearly double the amount of the GOP incumbent, Rep. John Bennett of Sallisaw.
Meanwhile, Republicans are targeting several Democratic seats in hopes of growing their supermajority.
