Poll: Texans Overwhelmingly Favor Background Checks For Gun Purchases

A recent poll reveals that Texas voters overwhelmingly support criminal background checks on gun purchases.

According to the University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll, more than half of Texas voters “strongly support” mental and criminal background checks, while another quarter of respondents said they “somewhat support” them. Only 17 percent of voters say they oppose background checks.

Another section of the poll showed that almost half of Texans see income inequality as a “major problem.”

However, most of those same voters don’t think the federal government should do anything about the issue. With that said, almost two-thirds of Texas voters favor an increase in the federal minimum wage, which currently stands at $7.25 an hour.

The numbers were split along party lines, with 90 percent of Democrats favoring a minimum wage increase, while only 37 percent of Republicans approve of the idea.
