How Will the Recent SCOTUS Ruling Affect Texas Abortion Clinics?

Eric Gay

This week the Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that had closed over half the state’s abortion clinics.

Now the question becomes, will those clinics re-open? And if so, when?

The Washington Post reports that on Monday abortion providers across Texas said they are planning to reopen. But the process could take months. Meanwhile, pro-life forces in the state are planning to introduce new legislation aimed at keeping the clinics shuttered. In a statement, Republican State Senator Charles Perry said: “Next session we will revisit this issue to ensure both women and unborn children are protected.”

State Rep. Jonathan Stickland said to expect “an absolute onslaught of pro-life legislation” during the upcoming legislative session. The 2013 law required all abortion providers to meet ambulatory surgical standards and physicians to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.
