Health Officials: Flu Shots Are the Best Way to Fight the Illness

The first flu case of the season has been reported in Kansas, and that means flu season is officially underway.

As KSN reports, health officials say the flu vaccine is the single best way to protect yourself and those around you from the flu. Last season, almost a thousand deaths were reported in Kansas due to influenza and pneumonia, a serious complication of influenza.

Everyone older than six months should get a flu vaccine each year to help fight the flu and keep it from spreading to others. It’s especially important for high-risk people. These include children under 5, adults 65 and older; pregnant women, and up to two weeks post-partum; and residents of nursing homes and other care facilities. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the antibodies to provide protection against infection.

The shot is quick and convenient, available at health clinics and pharmacies across the High Plains.
