In touch with the world ... at home on the High Plains

How healthy are High Plains states?

How healthy are people on the High Plains? According to a new study from the Pew Charitable Trusts, only two of the five states in the HPPR listening area rank among the top half of states when it comes to health.

Colorado was listed as the sixth healthiest state in America, according to mortality rate figures. However, an examination of Colorado at the county level reveals that counties in the southeastern part of the state are notably less healthy than the rest of the state. North central Colorado looks to be the healthiest.

Meanwhile, Nebraska is ranked 19th in the U.S. when it comes to mortality rate.

The rest of the listening area falls lower on the list. Texas is ranked number 30, and Kansas number 33.

Oklahoma had a very poor showing, landing at number 48 among 50 states and the District of Columbia. Only Mississippi, Alabama, and West Virginia had a lower rank.
