Texas Foundation Puts $50 Million Toward Teacher Scholarships in Texas

A Texas nonprofit recently injected a lot of life—and money—into the Texas public education system. The Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation will put $50 million toward scholarships for teachers over the next decade.

As The Austin American-Statesman reports, the program, known as the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers, will allow college students pursuing a teaching career to receive $8,000 annually in scholarship funding.

The goal of the initiative is to bring in more high-quality applicants to teaching positions in the Lone Star State. The program is particularly focused on high-needs schools. The scholarship program will offer 500 teaching fellows annually from 10 universities. Earlier this year, grocery-store magnate Charles Butt announced a $100 million investment to help develop strong school district leaders across the state
