Amarillo, Canyon School Districts Oppose Vouchers and "School Choice"

J Nguyen

Some Texas Panhandle school districts are standing up to what they see as unfair treatment of public school students by the Texas Legislature.

As The Amarillo Globe-News reports,a bill is making its way through the Texas House of Representatives that would authorize $60 million in grants for special needs students to attend private schools. The bill, known as SB 2, was already approved by the Senate during this special legislative session.

Critics see the bill as an effort by so-called “school-choice” advocates to get a foot in the door, legislatively.

Over the last few months, the Amarillo Independent School District has been fighting against the idea of school choice. AISD argued that local students are already allowed to attend any school they choose.

Canyon ISD superintendent Darryl Flusche, agrees, saying vouchers will pull money from the public schools in Canyon.
