Study: Graduation Rates At Texas Charters 30 Points Lower Than Public Schools

According to a new study, the average graduation rate of Texas charter schools students is almost 30 percentage points lower than that of traditional public schools.

As Houston Public Media reports, the 2017 study from the Texas Education Agency showed that fewer than two out of every three Texas charter school students graduated on time.

These numbers haven’t been showing up on accountability reports because charter schools have a number of ways of fudging the numbers—including rating themselves under alternative standards or excluding high numbers of students from the graduation count.

While only 62 percent of charter students graduate on time, a full 90 percent of public school students do so.

The study compiled data from all charter schools in the state, including those that have asked the state to be rated under alternative standards.
