Kansas high school graduates performed slightly better on the ACT than the average student in 2018.
The ACT national annual report released earlier this week included data from the 1.9 million students in the class of 2018 who took the college readiness test. A perfect score on the ACT is 36. The average composite score for Kansas students was 21.6. The national average was 20.8.
Consistent with national trends, Kansas students performed best in English, and science was the subject they in which they scored lowest. Notably, Kansas science scores were nearly 14 percent better than the national average.
Overall, national averages are down since last year. College readiness in math and English has been steadily declining since 2014. Fewer than a quarter of underserved graduates – minorities, lower income and/or first-generation college students – showed overall readiness.
