Looking Back with Gratitude: Programs as Diverse as the People

Chapter Five

First Anniversary program listings carried a message from the station director – “We’ve dedicated ourselves to offering a listening schedule which is as diverse and interesting as the people of Southwest Kansas.”

This included every weekday morning NPR’s Morning Edition, SunSound, and Rural Free Delivery. The noon hour offered music from Broadway, big band sounds, organ music, folk music, and afternoons were filled with continuous music; drama (A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Star Wars with Mark Hamil and Anthony Daniels recreating their film roles),  public affairs discussions from KSU, exploring emerging  political power in America, the BBC Science Magazine, and options in education. All Things Considered from NPR rounded out the day. Evening programming included Spider’s Web (story telling from classical and contemporary literature for children and their parents), Studs Terkel Almanac, and myriad musical choices. Weekends offered Silver Rails, Cowboy Joe’s Radio Ranch, Sadadito Alegre, Down Home, A Prairie Home Companion, and more music offerings.

KANZ succeeded in offering a listening schedule as diverse and interesting as the people of Southwest Kansas! Coverage area was 100,000 WATTS.

Yes. The KANZ listeners “saddled up” and bought those WATTS. Thanks to Radio Ray. Knowing his work was done, he packed his bags and left. But - he did promise to keep in touch and said he might even come back from time to time. STAY TUNED!
