Despite Criticism, Crop Insurance Receives Full Support From Farmers

James Watkins

Support for crop insurance programs is nearly unanimous among farmers, reports The High Plains and Midwest Ag Journal. These same farmers also oppose any legislative attempts to undermine the risk management tool.

In fact, 96 percent oppose funding cuts to crop insurance. 97 percent would prefer that crop insurance be administered by the private sector instead of the government. And a full 99 percent of farmers say current low commodity prices and extreme weather make crop insurance coverage a necessity. The information comes from a new study conducted by the Crop Insurance Professionals Association.

However, not everyone loves the programs. The Center for Rural Affairs recently gavecrop insurance programs a failing grade. In their report, the Center said: “Crop insurance gives mega-farms an advantage in bidding up land costs, driving their smaller neighbors out of business, and preventing the next generation of farmers from ever getting started.”
