Kansas farmers are looking to build a relationship with Cuba, reports The High-Plains/Midwest Ag Journal.
Kansas ag leaders gathered in Olathe, Kansas, on Monday to meet with members of Engage Cuba, an advocacy organization that promotes the economic welfare of the island. The aim of the meeting was to create the Engage Cuba Kansas State Council. The new group hopes to open up a new market for Kansas wheat and other ag products. Cuba imports up to 80 percent of its food.
Yet, according to Engage Cuba, American farmers continues to lose market share to Brazil, Argentina and the EU. Last year Cuban agricultural imports totaled nearly $2 billion. James Williams, the president of Engage Cuba, said his organization believes there are tremendous benefits for the people of Kansas in a new relationship with Cuba.
