The biggest race in Texas is... for a seat on the U.S. Senate

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a two-term Republican senator has 20 competitors for his senate seat.  The pack consists of seven Republicans, five Democrats, four independents, three Libertarians, and one Green Party according to a recent article from the Texas Tribune.

On the Republican front:

  • Incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn
  • U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman
  • Curt Cleaver, hotel industry executive
  • Ken Cope, an aerospace consultant
  • Chris Mapp, owner of a Port O’Connor marine sales business
  • Reid Reasor, a computer animation firm owner
  • Dwayne Stovall, runs a Cleveland construction and oil field service company
  • Linda Vega, a Houston immigration attorney

Stockman has garnered the most attention when he chose to forego re-election and challenge Cornyn.
On the Democratic front:

  • David Alameel, a millionaire dentist
  • Michael Fjetland, businessman
  • Harry Kim a physician
  • Kesha Rogers, an anti-Obama political activist
  • Maxey Scherr, a lawyer

Alameel has attracted the most attention.  He previously ran for Congress in 2013 and spent more than $4,000 per vote to come in fourth.  He is backed by state Sen. Wendy Davis.
