How Do Trump and Cruz Supporters Differ on Immigration?

Sam Hodgson

A new study has found that people who back Ted Cruz for president seem less culturally anxious about immigration than those who back Trump. The PRRI / The Atlantic poll suggests the answer to that question is helping to shape the presidential race.

The poll asked voters whether it bothers them when they come in contact with immigrants who speak little or no English. 64 percent of Donald Trump supporters say immigrants who speak little or no English bother them. But only 46 percent of Ted Cruz supporters are disturbed by non-English speakers.

So, what’s the difference between the two men? Cruz has certainly had some harsh words for immigrants, but he’s also touted his parents’ roots in Cuba. Cruz has at least made marginal efforts to try to relate to immigrants in the United States. The same can’t be said for Trump.
