Marijuana Opponents Gearing Up to Attempt Potency Legislation

Cyrus McCrimmon

The most organized and widespread effort yet to battle marijuana in Colorado is underway, reports The Denver Post. The state Supreme Court last week cleared the way for a ballot measure that would set new potency and packaging limits on recreational marijuana. If passed, pot packaging would have to include warnings that the product carries a risk of “permanent loss of brain abilities.” Under the measure, pot potency would also be tightly controlled.

That means popular forms of marijuana such as vape pens and some edibles would become illegal under the law. Marijuana industry attorneys insist the law would ban 80 percent of marijuana products sold today. Supporters compare it to legislation limiting the strength of alcohol.

Legalization skeptics have tried to limit potency in the past, to no avail. Supporters will need to raise almost 100,000 signatures to put the measure on ballots.
